CoreWeave Inks Multi-Year Cloud Infrastructure Deal with Anthropic to Power Claude AI Models
In a significant expansion of its partnerships within the artificial intelligence sector, CoreWeave, a leading provider of cloud infrastructure optimized for GPU-intensive workloads, has entered into a multi-year agreement with Anthropic. This deal positions CoreWeave as a key supplier of high-performance computing resources to support the development and deployment of Anthropic’s Claude family of large language models.
Announced on Wednesday, the collaboration builds on prior engagements between the two companies and underscores the surging demand for scalable, specialized cloud platforms capable of handling the computational demands of advanced AI training and inference. CoreWeave will deliver substantial GPU capacity, leveraging its fleet of NVIDIA H100 and upcoming H200 GPUs, to enable Anthropic to scale its AI operations efficiently.
CoreWeave specializes in delivering cloud services tailored for AI and machine learning applications. Founded in 2019, the company has rapidly scaled its infrastructure, operating data centers across the United States and Europe. Its platform emphasizes high-performance networking, low-latency storage, and optimized GPU clustering, which are critical for the parallel processing required in training foundation models like those powering Claude. Unlike general-purpose cloud providers, CoreWeave’s architecture is purpose-built for AI workloads, offering features such as elastic scaling, managed Kubernetes orchestration, and direct access to cutting-edge NVIDIA hardware.
Anthropic, established in 2021 by former OpenAI executives including Dario and Daniela Amodei, has positioned itself as a frontrunner in responsible AI development. Its Claude models, including the recently released Claude 3 family, have garnered attention for their capabilities in reasoning, coding, and multimodal processing. Claude 3 Opus, for instance, has outperformed competitors on benchmarks like GPQA and MMLU, demonstrating superior performance in graduate-level science and general knowledge tasks. CoreWeave’s valuation has soared, reportedly reaching $19 billion following recent funding rounds, fueled by demand from AI leaders. The company has secured similar deals with entities like Microsoft and IBM, further solidifying its role in the ecosystem.
From a technical standpoint, the infrastructure CoreWeave provides is engineered for the unique requirements of large-scale AI. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, with their Transformer Engine and 80GB of HBM3 memory, excel in handling the trillion-parameter models typical of frontier AI. The H200, slated for broader deployment soon, doubles memory capacity to 141GB, addressing bottlenecks in long-context inference and training. CoreWeave’s network fabric, based on NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand, delivers up to 400Gb/s throughput per GPU, minimizing communication overhead in distributed training setups employing frameworks like PyTorch or JAX.
For Anthropic, this means enhanced capacity to iterate on Claude’s constitutional AI principles, which embed safety guardrails directly into model training. The partnership also supports Anthropic’s enterprise offerings, where Claude powers applications in coding assistance, data analysis, and customer support, often requiring sub-second response times under heavy loads.
