# Google Cloud Adds OpenAI Models, Becomes Only Major Cloud with Gemini, Claude, and GPT

Google Cloud now offers OpenAI models on its Vertex AI platform. This makes it the only major cloud provider to host all three leading AI model families: OpenAI, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s own Gemini.

The announcement arrived during Google Cloud Next. Enterprise customers can access OpenAI’s models directly inside Vertex AI while using the same governance and security tools they already deploy for Gemini and Claude.

## A Strategic Shift for Google

Google competes directly with OpenAI through its Gemini models. Yet the company chose to open its platform to its biggest rival.

The decision underscores a new priority: customer choice over platform lock-in. Businesses no longer want to be tied to a single AI provider.

> Choice is now the defining battleground in cloud AI. Enterprises refuse to be locked into a single model ecosystem.

## What OpenAI Models Are Available

The initial lineup includes GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini. Additional OpenAI models are expected to arrive later.

These models sit inside Vertex AI’s Model Garden. Developers can call them through the same API they already use for Claude and Gemini.

## How Access Works

OpenAI models are integrated natively into Vertex AI. That means customers get unified management, compliance controls, and monitoring across all three model families.

Google plans to expand the catalog over time. The first wave targets enterprises that already run workloads on Google Cloud and want more flexibility.

## A Direct Challenge to Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Azure has long been the default home for OpenAI workloads. Its deep partnership with OpenAI includes exclusive hosting arrangements.

Google’s move does not cancel those agreements. But it signals that OpenAI wants broader distribution, and Google is willing to be the venue.

> The real winner here is the customer. Running GPT-4o, Claude, and Gemini on one platform lowers integration costs and simplifies compliance.

## Pressure on AWS and Microsoft

Amazon Web Services offers Claude on Bedrock but does not host OpenAI models. Microsoft hosts OpenAI but not Google’s Gemini.

Google now covers all three. That positions Vertex AI as the neutral platform for evaluating and mixing models.

Analysts at the conference described the move as a validation of Google’s multi-model strategy. The company is betting that its infrastructure and enterprise tools will keep customers loyal, even when they use rival models.

## What It Means for Developers

Developers can now run the same prompt across GPT-4o, Claude, and Gemini inside one environment. Benchmarking becomes faster and cheaper.

They can also route workloads intelligently. Use one model for reasoning, another for generation, all without leaving Vertex AI.

This removes a serious operational headache. Teams previously had to juggle separate accounts, APIs, and compliance policies across multiple clouds.

## The Competitive Landscape Shifts

Google Cloud Next 2025 featured numerous AI announcements. The OpenAI integration overshadowed most of them.

Google executives framed the partnership as a direct response to customer demand. Enterprise buyers, they argue, want the freedom to pick the best model for each task.

## What Happens Next

Google has not published a timeline for adding more OpenAI models. It says the catalog will grow based on customer demand.

Claude remains fully supported on Vertex AI. Gemini stays prominently placed in the platform.

The partnership is a pragmatic truce between two fierce rivals. Both companies continue to compete aggressively in the consumer and developer markets.

Yet the infrastructure boundary has now blurred. If Google can host OpenAI, the cloud AI landscape has entered a genuinely open era.
