Intel Gets a Second Life as Google and Nvidia Weigh It as a TSMC Backup for AI Chips

Intel’s struggling foundry business may finally catch a break. Google and Nvidia are reportedly exploring the chipmaker as an alternative manufacturing partner for next-generation AI processors, seeking to reduce reliance on TSMC.

The move comes as TSMC faces capacity constraints and geopolitical risks in Taiwan. For Intel, it represents a potential lifeline for its foundry arm, which has lost billions and struggled to win major external clients since launching in 2021.


Why Google and Nvidia Need a Backup

AI chip demand is soaring, but TSMC cannot serve everyone. The Taiwanese giant controls over 90% of advanced logic chip manufacturing. Any disruption—from earthquakes to cross-strait tensions—could cripple the global AI supply chain.

Both Google and Nvidia are among TSMC’s largest customers. Their interest in Intel signals a strategic shift toward diversification. If Intel can deliver on process technology and yield, it could become a crucial second source for high-performance AI silicon.

What Intel Offers

  • US-based manufacturing. Intel’s fabs in Arizona, Ohio, and Oregon provide geographic diversity. This reduces dependence on East Asian supply chains and aligns with US government efforts to onshore chip production.
  • Existing partnerships. Intel already works with Amazon and Qualcomm on smaller-scale foundry deals. A Google or Nvidia contract would be its biggest win yet.

The Risks and Hurdles

Intel has missed deadlines before. Its 7nm and 4nm processes faced years of delay. Executives claim Intel 18A is on track, but skepticism remains high among potential customers.

Yields are another unknown. TSMC’s unmatched manufacturing consistency gives it a reliability premium. Intel must prove it can match those yields at scale—and do so consistently across high-volume AI chip orders.

What This Means for the AI Chip Market

For Intel, success would transform its narrative. The foundry business has been a financial drag, losing billions annually. Winning a major AI chip contract would validate its turnaround strategy under CEO Pat Gelsinger and justify the billions in US government subsidies it has received.

Failure would reinforce the TSMC monopoly. If Intel cannot deliver, the concentration risk remains unaddressed. Google and Nvidia would likely double down on TSMC, potentially seeking alternative non-traditional fabs or investing directly in new TSMC facilities abroad.


What Happens Next

Engineers from Google and Nvidia are already inside Intel fabs. They are validating Intel 18A process design kits and running test chips. Early results are expected by mid-2025.

A final decision could come by late 2025 or early 2026. If Intel passes qualification, mass production for Google’s TPU and Nvidia’s next-gen AI GPUs could begin in 2027—just as demand for AI compute is expected to triple again.
