Linus Torvalds to AI Critics in Linux Kernel: “Fork Off”
Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, has a blunt message for kernel developers who oppose AI-generated code: create your own fork if you don’t like it.
In a recent exchange on the Linux kernel mailing list, Torvalds dismissed concerns that AI tools pollute the codebase. He argued that AI is simply another tool, no different from compilers or autocomplete features.
“If you think AI is bad, you can always fork the kernel and do it your way,” he said.
Torvalds’ Core Argument: AI Is Inevitable
Torvalds acknowledged that AI-generated patches can introduce errors and oddities. But he insisted the community must adapt rather than resist.
“We’ve seen bad code from humans for decades. AI is just a new source,” he wrote. “We’ll handle it like we always do: review, test, and reject when needed.”
He also noted that he personally uses AI tools for code suggestions and finds them helpful for boilerplate tasks.
The Real Issue: Quality Control, Not Origin
The critics’ main worry is that AI-generated code lacks accountability and may introduce subtle bugs. Torvalds countered that the kernel’s rigorous review process already catches such issues.
“The quality of the code matters, not where it came from. If a patch is good, we merge it. If it’s bad, we reject it. That’s how it’s always worked.”
He warned that banning AI outright would be “hypocritical” given that the kernel already relies on automated tools for static analysis and formatting.
A Challenge to Opponents: Put Up or Shut Up
Torvalds directly challenged those who demand a ban. He said they should either accept the reality or leave the project.
- “Fork off” – If you disagree with the direction, maintain your own codebase without AI.
- “Prove it works” – Show that a manual-only approach produces better results.
- “Stop complaining” – The kernel is a collaborative project, not a democracy for every opinion.
