Microsoft follows Anthropic and OpenAI into the AI super app race with overhauled Copilot and AutoPilot agents

Microsoft is entering the AI super app race with a major overhaul of its Copilot platform and the introduction of autonomous agents called Autopilot.

The move mirrors recent strategies from Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which are building unified AI assistants that can handle complex, multi-step tasks.

A new Copilot built for action

The system uses large language models to understand user intent, break down goals into steps, and execute them via APIs and plugins. This is a direct shift from passive Q&A to proactive task completion.

Autopilot agents go autonomous

Alongside Copilot, Microsoft introduced Autopilot agents — standalone AI programs that can run independently. These agents handle repetitive workflows like data entry, scheduling, and report generation.

Microsoft’s strategy is to turn Copilot into a single point of control for all digital work. Instead of switching between apps, users will ask Copilot to manage email, create documents, analyze data, and even automate meetings.

The company is betting that deep integration with Office, Teams, and Azure will give it an edge over standalone AI assistants from competitors.

How it compares to Anthropic and OpenAI

Anthropic recently launched a “Claude Pro” tier with extended tool use and memory, while OpenAI is testing a “GPT-4 super agent” that can browse, code, and execute commands.

Microsoft’s advantage is distribution. Copilot is already installed on millions of Windows devices and Office 365 subscriptions. The challenge is making the agentic features reliable and secure enough for enterprise use.

What’s next for Copilot

Microsoft plans to roll out the new Copilot experience gradually, starting with commercial customers. A public preview of Autopilot agents is expected mid-2025.

The company is also working on cross-platform agents that can run on mobile and web, expanding beyond the Windows ecosystem.
