Gnoppix 25.8 Release Notes

Based on Debian “Trixie” and Gnoppix Beta Build #2239

Gnoppix 25.8 is built on the foundation of Debian “Trixie” and incorporates the new features and improvements from the latest Gnoppix beta releases. This new version brings significant updates in security, privacy, and performance.

At the same time, we’ve added our latest KDE version exclusively for our Gnoppix members. This includes KDE 6.4.4 with Linux Kernel 6.15.9 and all the latest software

Core System Enhancements

  • Debian “Trixie” Base: Gnoppix 25.8 inherits the stability and updated packages from Debian 13 “Trixie.” This includes over 11,294 new packages and updated versions for key software, such as desktop environments and LibreOffice.

  • Security Hardening: New security hardening features against ROP and COP/JOP attacks are included for amd64 and arm64 architectures.

  • HTTP Boot: This release adds HTTP Boot support for compatible UEFI and U-Boot firmware.

Security and Privacy

  • Enhanced Security: The system now includes next-generation AI integration and has replaced the Bottles application with Lutris to address security concerns.

  • Default Privacy: Gnoppix now prioritizes privacy by default.

    • Browser: Firefox-ESR as the main web browser.

    • Search Engine: search-us.gnoppix.org is now the default anonymous search engine.

  • Gnoppix Control GUI: The updated GUI offers visual options for managing privacy, including routing all traffic over Tor and the ability to change MAC addresses and wipe RAM.

AI and Application Improvements

  • AI Integration: The release features upgraded AI integration, including enhanced Krita for AI-powered painting and drawing, an improved conversational AI agent named Jan, and a significantly better HR-AI agent.

Known Issues and Future Tasks

  • Some categories within the NIST framework were reportedly too vaguely defined to be useful in practice.

  • Reduced support for the i386 architecture.

  • Changes in packages like openssh-server and RabbitMQ.

  • The /tmp and /var/tmp directories are now regularly cleaned.
