Hello Gnoppix Family! Today we are excited to announce the release of Gnoppix 26.1 XFCE Beta1. This is a member-only early access release (no public download) as a token of our gratitude for your continued support. Your donations and bug reports are what allow us to hire freelancers and keep this project moving forward. Thank You!
Privacy First, AI Second
Our primary mission remains providing a free, secure, and privacy-respecting Linux distribution. We are not here to provide you with free AI, a free API, or free tokens as our main product.
- Completely Optional: AI is fully separated from the core OS.
- AI rework: To use the AI features, you simply install Gnoppix and then choose to install the meta-ai-package to evaluate AI. If you not install the meta-package, no working AI
Our goal is local AI
- Privacy Advocacy: We understand that not everyone wants AI integrated into their desktop, and that is perfectly fine. Security and privacy remain our major features.
What’s New in 26.1 XFCE?
While this build includes minor bug fixes for the installed version, the major focus has been on system utility redesigns and AI infrastructure.
System & Desktop Updates
- LibreWolf & Betterbird: We have removed Firefox and Thunderbird in favor of LibreWolf and Betterbird as the new system defaults for enhanced privacy.
- Redesigned Gnoppix-Welcome: Now at version 25.1032, featuring a full redesign, a new secure internet indicator, and a “DE Detector” that correctly points XFCE users to Synaptic (instead of KDE’s Discover).
- Gnoppix GPG (1.6): A modern GUI to create and maintain PGP keys, now including an “Export Private Key” function.
- Tor Bridges: Added a new service to bypass censorship directly via the Gnoppix Wiki.
- Security Patches: Major updates to Gnoppix Webmail addresses to mitigate XSS, clipboard abuse, and SQL injection (CVE-2024-37383 through CVE-2024-37387).
- Krita: Upgraded to 5.2.14 with AI Plugin V. 1.4.5.
AI & Developer Tools (optinal)
- Gemini 2.5 and 3 Flash Preview: Added support for this state-of-the-art image generation and contextual model.
- Grok 4.1 Fast: Now available on
ai.gnoppix.orgvia the xAI Agent Tools API - Seamless API Switch: Our AI API is now OpenAI SDK compatible. You can switch your existing applications to Gnoppix LLMs without rewriting code. Learn more here.

ai.gnoppix.orgis now set to private and is no longer available for public use. Please utilize your local AI or, if necessary, purchase AI tokens. There are many free providers currently available. Gnoppix is not a “welfare” AI provider; every token used costs us money, and we can no longer subsidize these costs for free.
