A New Direction for Gnoppix KDE
After 20 years, I recently took a look at the Kubuntu project and was saddened to hear from many users that it no longer meets their needs. Having had an early view myself before COVID, I was more or less shocked to see what was left of the distribution I started 20 years ago.
In response to this, I’m excited to announce the launch of the Gnoppix KDE Project. We are looking for community members to participate, lead, and help shape its future.
Current Status: The developer version is currently available for download member only, but it is risky to run as a daily driver. It is also not actively maintained due to a lack of developers. So you’ll hit bugs. Due to the very high demand for this version, we are now committed to changing this.
The goal is to offer a compelling alternative that will be freely available to everyone. However, if we don’t get enough community support, it will have to be placed behind a paywall, similar to the PRO version.
I plan to release three distinct versions to suit different users:
-
Stable Version: Based on the Debian release cycle, this version is for users who need a stable, modern desktop. It will feature new software every two years while maintaining package versions for reliability.
-
Updated Version: A more frequently updated, Ubuntu-like version within a tested environment.
-
Developer Desktop: A cutting-edge version with the latest software for developers and power users.
Users will be able to choose the version that best suits their needs. Any help is welcome, and even just testing would be incredibly helpful!
This is a great opportunity to be a part of the open-source community, so let’s build this together! Please send me a message, or message me on discord, if you have questions or would like to sign up. The deadline to sign up is September 30, 2025.
“You don’t have to be a developer to help! I believe everyone has something valuable to contribute. Whether you’re testing, sharing new ideas, or just reporting bugs, your help is incredibly useful! Here, you can truly change things! Join us on Discord #kde-reloaded.
As a way to get the project started, I’ll make the first unstable version publicly available for download once we see more than two people post in the community-channel. This is our first step toward building something great together!
