Google Deepmind and A24 team up on AI filmmaking research

Google DeepMind and independent film studio A24 have announced a joint research initiative exploring how generative AI can support filmmaking. The partnership, revealed in a blog post on March 11, 2025, focuses on developing tools that assist with pre-production, storyboarding, and visual style experimentation — not on replacing human creators.

The Collaboration

The project brings together DeepMind’s expertise in large-scale generative models and A24’s reputation for distinctive, character-driven cinema. The stated goal is to create research prototypes that filmmakers can use to rapidly iterate on ideas, rather than to generate finished scenes.

“Our aim is to build tools that empower storytellers, not to automate storytelling,” the blog post says. “These models are intended to help explore visual ideas, not to make creative decisions.”

According to the announcement, the teams are focusing on input-level controls that allow directors to influence the output of generative video models — for example, by specifying mood, lighting, and camera angle. This is a departure from many existing text-to-video tools that produce results difficult to fine-tune.

Research Goals

The research will examine three specific areas:

  • Style consistency: Keeping visual identity stable across multiple shots generated from a single model.
  • Temporal coherence: Ensuring motion and action flow naturally from one frame to the next, a well-known weakness of current generative video.
  • Interactive editing: Allowing filmmakers to adjust specific elements — such as an actor’s expression or a background object — after the initial generation.

DeepMind has emphasized that all outputs will be considered non-commercial research material. No footage from the collaboration will be used in any A24 production unless explicit consent is given and legal frameworks are established.

Potential Implications

The partnership signals a shift in how major AI labs engage with creative industries. Instead of simply licensing models, DeepMind is embedding itself directly into a studio’s workflow to gather real-world feedback.

A24’s role is not limited to advising. The studio is providing curated film clips, concept art, and directorial notes to help train the models. This data, DeepMind says, remains the property of A24 and will not be used for any other purpose.

No timeline for public release or product launch has been disclosed. The project is described as “ongoing fundamental research” with no guarantee of a commercial tool.
