The biggest cost driver is inference, not training.
Running ChatGPT and other models for users now costs more than training them. OpenAI spent about $4 billion on inference compute and another $3 billion on training.
“Inference costs are now the dominant factor,” said one analyst familiar with the numbers.
High hopes for future profitability rest on automation and higher prices.
OpenAI plans to increase subscription fees for advanced tools like ChatGPT Pro. It also aims to automate more of its own operations.
The company is betting that longer usage and enterprise deals will offset the per-query cost. But margins remain razor-thin.
OpenAI is not alone in the red—this is an industry pattern.
Most leading AI labs operate at a loss. Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and others face similar cost structures. The race to build bigger models demands huge upfront capital.
Investors have so far tolerated the burn rate, viewing it as a necessary phase. They expect market dominance to eventually yield profits.

OpenAI’s spending spree shows that state-of-the-art AI remains extremely expensive to run. Smaller players will find it hard to compete on scale.
