Samsung Deploys ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex to South Korean Staff
Samsung is rolling out access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex to employees in South Korea. The company confirmed the move in an internal memo, signaling a major shift in its AI strategy. This comes after a previous ban on generative AI tools over data security fears.
The deployment targets key business units. Staff in the Device Solutions (DS) division and the Samsung Research center will get the tools first. These teams handle semiconductor and research work, areas where AI can boost productivity.
“The rollout is limited to specific divisions for now, with broader access planned later,” the company stated.
Why Samsung Reversed Its AI Ban
Samsung had previously prohibited generative AI tools. The company banned ChatGPT and similar services in May 2023 after employees accidentally leaked confidential data. A single incident of sensitive source code being uploaded to ChatGPT triggered the lockdown.
The ban now ends for select teams. The new enterprise licenses provide data privacy guarantees. OpenAI’s enterprise tier ensures customer prompts and data are not used for training. This reduces the risk of leaks that plagued the consumer version.
