A two-year university study has found that banning artificial intelligence tools from classrooms leaves students worse off, arguing that outright prohibitions hinder learning and fail to prepare graduates for an AI-driven workforce.

The Study’s Key Recommendations

Based on the findings, the research team proposed a new classroom model:

  • Teach AI literacy as a core skill: Treat AI tools like calculators or word processors — teach when and how to use them effectively.

The study challenges the growing trend of outright AI bans in schools and universities. Policymakers are under pressure to act quickly, but the evidence suggests that punitive approaches backfire.

“We are preparing students for a world that already runs on AI. Banning it from the classroom is like banning calculators from a math class,” the report concluded.
